Sebastia

Sebastia, a small archaeological town, sits on top of a hill Northwest of Nablus, Palestine surrounded by Shavei Shomron, an illegal Israeli settlement and confiscated agricultural fields of olive groves and apricot trees. This ancient site was excavated multiple times over the last century by colonial archaeologists funded by Zionist individuals and institutions. The first excavation of 1908 led by Harvard University took advantage of Sebastia locals including women, men, and children as cheap labor digging their own land for the sake of biblical archaeology. Each excavation extracted soil and artifacts from the ground, taking what they considered valuable to their home institutions and leaving pottery shards and rubble on the surface. Today, what’s left of the archaeological monuments is contested by the nearby settlement as well as the Israeli military. The Roman Forum is a battlefield, but the locals are incredibly resilient.

Everything You Have Is Yours

In this sensitively crafted documentary, choreographer Hadar Ahuvia explores the roots of the Israeli folk dances she grew up dancing with her mother. Facing romanticized stories about her grandparents, Zionist ‘kibbutznik’ settlers in Palestine in the 1930’s, she begins a personal endeavor unpacking and confronting the appropriative origins of this inherited dance. Through this vulnerable, personal story a larger weaving of powerful artistic portraits emerge— Jewish, Israeli, and Palestinian dancers living in New York City question what is inherited and what we choose to carry forward.

The Kibbutz Brigade in Eilat

Between the mountains of Edom and the Red Sea, the younger and older workers of the United Kibbutz Brigade positioned themselves in order to build and settle the city of Eilat. Under the leadership of Beni Marshak, the organization’s secretaries are exploring the possibility of establishing permanent structures while supervising British activities in the area. Meanwhile, in the brigade camp, meals are being prepared and clothes are being thoroughly washed by the dedicated female brigade members. The brigade members take on tasks for the preparation of the settlement, in carpentry, fishing, planting gardens and orchards, and in the construction work of a Solel Boneh. The 12th grade students from the Kibbutzim come to be impressed by the pioneering work in the city.

Resistance Climbing

Bruns and Harris also opened Wadi Climbing, the first indoor climbing gym in Palestine. Today, gathered in the conflict-torn hills of Palestine, a diverse team of Bedouins, activists and urban professionals have embraced climbing as a much-needed respite from the burden of Israeli occupation. American writer and climber Andrew Bisharat visits the West Bank to explore his own roots and the power of climbing to transform lives. This documentary is part of the Reel Rock 17 series released in 2023.

East Wind

A strong east wind brings snow, rain and also memories of her father. Only a few objects, newspaper clippings and diary entries make him present.
