Things Fall Apart is the first in Robert Darroll's Taiwanese Trilogy which follows as an interpretation to a lengthy period of teaching in Taiwan. It is dedicated to Darroll's students in the Department of Digital Media at Ming Chuan University. The experimental short was created as part of Darroll's research into Digital Aesthetics. The scenes were shot mostly in Taoyuan and Tianmu, Taipei. The film serves as a reminder that everything that comes into existence is temporary.

About the experimental short, Darroll wrote, "Digital technology is a narrative, a description of the world which reassures us that if it's broken, we can fix it. Digital technology describes and imitates the world on one hand, and on the other it offers us an alternative virtual paradise now."

This piece represents a kind of autobiographical vision. I use myself to create all the figures, sometimes employing masks from the Noh theater to vary my persona. A sea of richly colored figures floating and flying are accompanied by eerie sounds. The animated figures are constructed in the manner of puppetry and collage. The imagery continues until the artist's involvement with her "canvases" is revealed, with her performative self finally emerging.
