During the Russian Revolution, a young nobleman and his peasant maid flee from their homeland to Constantinople where they marry and begin a challenging new life.
After years working as a border patrolman, José has developed a salty crust of cynicism about his work, which places him in a position to decide the fates of many. José's weary attitude is put to the test when he encounters Nathalie, a German tourist assisting a boatload of refugees she discovered landing on the Canary shores. One of those people, a Congolese man named Zola, is placed in an internment camp. Much to the objections of her husband Paul, Nathalie tries to help him escape. Yet Zola and his son Mamadou eventually find themselves in yet another precarious situation, in which they are dependent on nefarious smugglers.
After arriving in 1940 New York, Freddy struggles to find work. His world of refugee acquaintances includes the depressed daughter of a poet/delicatessen owner, an aging surgeon who cannot find work, and a lovable charlatan photographer.

The plot is based on the Norse myth of the god Baldr (Sergey Udovikov), offering a contemporary perspective on the rebirth of the gods. The story begins when three young men discover an ancient warrior's grave. They attempt to resurrect him using incantations, but the earth refuses to let him go. A powerful enchantress reveals the truth: the soul of one of the youths is her own son, a warrior reborn as a mortal to seek revenge. Baldr’s father, Hjarvard (Ragday Oleksandr Tymofieiev), strives to raise him as a true warrior. He teaches his son weaponry and military craft, convinced that a real man must rely on strength rather than magic. But as the boundaries between the worlds of men and gods blur, forgotten oaths demand retribution. Baldr must choose: follow his father’s path or embrace his true nature to restore balance to Midgard—even if it means challenging the gods themselves.
