Giselle SPBT

No ballet better epitomizes romance than Giselle, also known for its rich melody. This ballet explores the traditional theme of love triumphing over death. Bursting with freshness, spontaneity and emotion, the musical core for Giselle remains one of ballet music’s greatest successes. The Saint Petersburg Ballet Theatre remains faithful to the version of this ballet that is at once the closest to the original and the most romantic. Live SPBT`s performance 'Giselle' was filmed on 16th March 2007 on the spacious stage of the State Theatre in Pretoria during the second SPBT`s tour of South Africa. Giselle was created in 1841 at the Royal Academy of Music, now the Opéra National de Paris.

In the magical world of dancing fireflies, we follow the story of the main character - naughty Svätojanek, which takes place against the backdrop of the changing seasons. Little episodes from the life of the industrious little bugs, set in the endless cycle of nature, are arranged in dancing images that carry a strong ethical message.

The Nutcracker

Live from the Bolshoi Theatre, this 1978 remake of the two-act classical Christmas ballet blends Tchaikovsky's beloved melodies with superb dancing. Famed Bolshoi duo Yekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev star in this production of Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet, The Nutcracker. Maximova dances the role of Maria, the young girl whose mysterious uncle Drosselmeyer gives her a wooden nutcracker (Vasiliev) for Christmas. When he comes to life, she rescues him from marauding mice and is taken to the Kingdom of Sweets.

Swan Lake

Matthew Bourne choreographs this performance of Tchaikovsky's ballet, filmed live in London. The show, the longest running ballet on both Broadway and the West End, follows the story of Prince Siegfried, who promises his love to swan maiden Odette, only to be tricked by magician Von Rothbart. The stars include Richard Winsor, Dominic North, Nina Goldman, Madelaine Brennan, Steve Kirkham and Joseph Vaughan.

Coppelia

When everyone in town falls under the spell of charismatic cosmetic surgeon Doctor Coppelius, feisty Swan must act to save her sweetheart Franz, before his heart is used to spark life into Coppelia – the ‘perfect’ robot-woman the Doctor has created.

Fourteen Days

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake

Prince Siegfried is celebrating his coming of age. The Queen Mother informs him that, the following day, during the grand ball held to mark his birthday, he must choose a future wife. Displeased at not being able to choose her out of love, he goes into the forest during the night. It is then that he spots a flock of swans. He raises his crossbow, prepares to shoot, but stops immediately: before him stands a beautiful woman dressed in white swan feathers, followed by twelve other women dressed in the same way, four of whom are known as the ‘little swans’. ‘Swan Lake’ is a ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, comprising 4 acts and 4 scenes, or 3 acts and 4 scenes. The staging is based on a libretto by Vladimir Begichev and Vasili Geltser. The story is an ancient German legend recounting the tale of the beautiful Princess Odette, transformed into a swan by the curse of the evil sorcerer Rothbart. John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare's tragedy about the feuding Montagues and Capulets, whose children find each other and overcome the deep-seated hatred, has inspired countless artists. John Cranko also took up this timeless material in 1962 and created one of his most popular ballets. Sergei Prokofiev's descriptive music - in combination with Jürgen Rose's opulent sets and costumes – forms the perfect back drop which allows the scenes to unfold just as if they had sprung directly from an Italian Renaissance painting.

Kylián – Mosty času

Four outstanding works by world-renowned Czech dancer and choreographer Jiří Kylián performed for the first time by the National Theatre Ballet. The National Theatre Ballet has prepared a special premiere entitled Kylián – Bridges of Time for this year's celebrations of the founding of the republic. This project will not only dignifiedly support this important anniversary, but also pay tribute to the famous Czech native, choreographer Jiří Kylián, who has undoubtedly become an icon of world dance. The evening will present four works to the audience – Psalm Symphony, Bella Figura, Petite Mort, and Six Dances.
