A Bridge Too Far

Troopship Nubia Leaving Harbour

An actuality film of the P&O troopship Nubia departing Southampton for the Boer War in South Africa on 21st October 1899. War had been declared on the 11th October so this departure forms part of a number of chartered ships leaving from around Britain every day. According to the BFI programme notes, the Nubia docked at Cape Town on 13 Nov 1899, after sailing for 23 days. The soldiers onboard included the 1st Battaliion Scots Guards and 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire regiment. These soldiers first saw action 10 days after docking on 23rd November at the Battle of Belmont. This film was made and distributed by the Fuerst Brothers in London.

One hundred years of evil

Did Adolf Hitler survive WWII and live on under an assumed identity? Norwegian researcher Skule Antonsen sides with Spanish documentary filmmaker Idelfonso Elizalde to follow in the footsteps of Adolf Munchenhauser, a Hitler look alike captured by the Allied forces in Berlin 1945. This Rockpalast was recorded on 1st December 1976 in the Sporthalle Cologne and shows the inventors of the legendary "dual lead-guitar/twin guitar sound" with the classical line-up of the band from Andy Powell (guit., voc.), Martin Turner (bass, voc.), Steve Upton (dr.) and Laurie Wisefield (guit.) in captivating form and mood. In 1976 Wishbone Ash were at the zenith of their career. Their albums, from "Pilgrimage" to "New England", reached worldwide top positions in the album charts, were refined with silver and gold, the band was constantly on tour around the globe and tracks like "The King Will Come", "Warrior" or "Blowing Free" achieved cult status among fans of guitar-oriented progressive rock and are milestones in rock history. Characteristic of Wishbone Ash is their melodic, guitar-oriented rock, which is dominated by two electric guitars played in duet. In addition there is an almost ballad-like vocal style.
