Piggly Wiggly Super Duper Supermarket Day

This is a 1996 sing-along VHS tape created by regional grocery store chain, Piggly Wiggly's "Piggly Pals Studio." A teacher starts things out by attempting to educate a bunch of 10-year-old preschoolers about nutrition. While, at first, this seems strange, their inclusion in the remedial class is soon justified by asinine responses to their teacher's simple, food-oriented question. None of the kids can properly identify even a single food group, but responses like "bubble gum" and "pickles" serve to illustrate that the two boys are a few steps behind either of their female classmates. Fortunately, the interaction garners the attention of "Inspector Quigley" and a giant grocery store mascot pig. The pair are bound and determined to tackle the seemingly insurmountable task of teaching the feeble kids their food groups.

The Betrayed

It seems that misdeeds by inhabitants of the Dutch provinces make for believable stories, whether they are mysteries by Willem van de Wettering, or psychological thrillers by Simon Vestdijk, who wrote the book this film is based on. In the story, set in the 1950s, Hendrik Grond (Gijs Scholten van Aschat) has a good law practice, and a happy marriage which has produced a son. He is so contented that his world is completely shattered when, undetected, he catches his wife in bed with his law firm's senior partner. In fact, he has become quietly unhinged, and he arranges a series of "accidents" to ensure his revenge - becoming involved in the local underworld in the process. Will he succeed in committing a series of "perfect" crimes, or will the police inspector (Johan Simons) investigating these incidents get wise?

Herzlich willkommen

Friedrich manages to escape from East Germany to the West in the 1950s. On his arrival, he is greeted with the words Herzlich Willkommen, or "cordial, heartfelt welcome." However, once he finds employment, what he experiences is anything but a cordial welcome at his new job, where he is a teacher/counselor for "wayward children" located in a former castle. The institution is headed by a former Nazi who runs it with the help of the more criminal, bullying boys. Despite these obstacles, Friedrich manages to establish a rapport with a boy who wants to go "straight," and also begins to have an affair with an attractive female teacher at the school.

This biographical film is set in 1937, with Fallada suffering the effects of living under a microscope. The film details his decline, as he is intermittently imprisoned and threatened in order to motivate him to write for the Fatherland. This is one of the few films to take a serious, in-depth look at the tribulations of a creative artist pulled in all different directions by the real world.
