The Widows' Clan is a play written by Ginette Garcin, premiered in 1989 at the Théâtre Municipal de Charenton and repeated in 1990 at the Théâtre Fontaine. It will be recorded for television and broadcast on Antenna 2 in 1992. Jacky and Marcelle, already widows for several years, console Rose whose husband has just died in the toilet: he has been flushed on the head. All three form the clan of widows and tell each other, in spicy secrets, their past couple life. Rose soon learns of the existence of Mireille, the mistress of her late husband, and of her two daughters Jeanne and Jeanine. All these little people obviously come to claim their share of inheritance. Rose goes from surprise to surprise, supported with humor by her two friends, until the final scene where the doorbell rings: a little boy (voiceover) brings back a pair of gloves found in the street, Rose asks her name , his name is Jacques Stelman, like her late husband!
1927. The place is Kalmar and the Grossman family home. A hungover manufacturer Julius Grossman and his wife Solveig are waiting at home for their daughter Betty to arrive by train from the capital. To their great surprise, she arrives in a car with her suitor Greger in tow. What's more, she seems to be full of contemporary trends and modern ideas about marriage, among other things. Her father Julius would rather see her marry his business partner Hilding and thus retain control of the company. Hilding is a dull, somewhat dreary, and slightly overage bachelor who suddenly becomes every woman's dream prince when a rumor begins to circulate that he had a relationship with the famous movie star Rita Ray in his youth.
Side by side in a leafy suburb, Thom lives in one flat, Alethea in another. It's pretty clear that their respective, unsatisfying lives would improve enormously if they just met each other. But with a wall literally between them, this seems highly improbable. Then there's the building's Power Box, having an existential crisis about the eventual collapse of the universe, and the super nova from five thousand years ago. Then there's time travelling on an equation for the speed of light and too much sugar. There's demon magpie attacks, laptops in love, cats dancing to Prince and sock puppet nightmares. And a tiny prayer by the Wall, hoping that all of these pieces can come together for one magical moment of love.
Each is dependent on the other. He breaks into the passport office to get a passport. He is surprised and ends up back in prison, where he is trained in military drill. After his release, he once again lodges with relatives, his sister and brother-in-law. Wearing a second-hand captain's uniform, he first takes over a guard unit and uses it to occupy Köpenick town hall, where all the employees of the town council submit to the supposed captain. The mayor is promoted to Berlin and Voigt presents himself to the authorities a few days later. At first, everyone present laughs at the prank, but then Voigt is made aware of the legal consequences. He is sent back to prison, but shortly afterwards he is pardoned by the Emperor.
We take him for someone else, a Mr. Schmitt. And one evening, at dinner, he and his wife, played by Valérie Bonneton, realize that their apartment has changed, that their business is not theirs. The play is about the perception of oneself. I love the absurd universe of its author, Sébastien Thiéry.
