The sun’s energy circulates throughout the earth, feeding the cycle of life. Everything is connected in a natural loop, which repeats, like the circular discs of magical optical toys. This perfectly balanced rhythm is disrupted by human excess, throwing the cycle out of orbit and temporarily stopping the circulation of energy in nature.
“Sweet Spot” is an experimental animated short film that uninhibitedly explores the dialog between the work and its authors, Jorge Ribeiro and Paulo Patrício, whose points of view and creative approaches, both in terms of cinematographic language and ways of being, are quite different. Through this duality, and starting from a shared but at the same time individual process, the directors seek to understand at what point the short film they are making together reaches its “sweet spot”. In other words, the ideal point at which the work is considered finished.

Odds & Ends is a sly comment on the collage film and Beat culture. To discarded travel and advertising footage found at a local film laboratory, Belson Shimane added a mélange of animation—assemblages, cutouts, color fields, and line drawings—and faux hipster narration by Jacobs (credited via the anagram Rheny Bojacs) punctuated by a bongo backing. Strung together with doublespeak and non sequiturs, the monologue skirts the edge of nonsense as Jacobs waxes on about poetry, jazz, “reaching the public,” “having a good time,” and—although “money doesn’t count”—the “possibility of subsidy” through grants. Footage of champagne, tropical beaches, and exotic peoples intermingle with rhythmic drawings and stop-motion flights of fancy. The visuals race on through dazzling transformations, both amplifying and undercutting the patter. —National Film Preservation Foundation. This ultra-short, experimental video art piece serves as a stark apparatus for decoding the aggressive rhythm and discontinuous production of contemporary life. The work is built upon a Stop Motion loop composed of just 12 frames, using this brief, intense format as an installation of shock that conveys the systemic pressure of a speed-obsessed society. The central figure, the rat, is placed to represent the archetypal subject of the urban underclass—the individual whose labor is rendered invisible and who is constantly forced into a struggle for survival. What we observe is not an advancement, but a fruitless scurry trapped in a vicious cycle. As the image repeats, it whispers that what we perceive as progress is, in fact, nothing more than an exhausting, self-referential recurrent routine. Rhythm/12 Frames compels the viewer to question both their own limits of perception and the grim reality of existence reduced to a survival mechanism within the system
