Inspired by Picasso's Guernica (1937), this film is fundamentally about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a foreign country, a young woman reunites with her friend at a cafe adhering to the laws that prohibit loud speaking. As efforts to comply with the law unfold, her cellphone disrupts the "peace" with a sudden loud ring. Despite her attempts to silence it, state officers expel her from the cafe.
When Tatiana's friends find her catatonic, they decide to gather the group of friends to try to help her. Between mystical and medical approaches, they realize that to wake Tatiana up they must call Arthur, her ex-boyfriend. Born in Constantine and raised in Toulouse, he was France's best swimmer in the 1940s. Arrested by the Gestapo and then deported, he swam in the unsanitary pools of Auschwitz, from which his wife and daughter never returned. In their memory, this survivor of horror picked himself up and resumed competition until he regained his title as French Champion and once again represented his country at the Olympic Games. This delightful short is a world away from Tomomatsu's later works. It's a lovely story, told well. The reason that I tracked it down is because I'm quite a fan of Alice Sailor's music. She fronts new wave band Amaryllis and I was curious to see her acting. She has frequently supplied theme songs and other music to several of Tomomatsu's films. Indeed, the most disturbing sequence in this movie is accompanied by a psychotic Amaryllis track, 'Haha', and the closing piece is another Amaryllis song, 'Usagi'. This rip comes from the 'Eat The Schoolgirl' DVD, where it was one of the extras. Having just watched the main feature from that disc, I can say with some certainty that I found this tale far more enjoyable.

As he complies, the federal agents break in and attempt to subdue the man, who shoots himself in the head before he reveals where the woman is hidden. The Driver then tries to find the hostage before she drowns in the trunk of a sinking car. As a twist, the kidnapped woman is revealed to be the hostage taker's lover. She coldly taunts the dying man in the hospital.
