Winter Vacation

An ordinary village in Northern China, the last day of the winter vacation. Four idle, aimless adolescents gather at Zhou Zhixin's home, a friend who lives with his father, brother and nephew. Like most contemporary teenagers, these youths want to enjoy their last day of holiday and simply hang out in this place where nothing ever seems likely to happen. Their conversations are desultory and they sometimes seem to argue for argument's sake. One of them, Laowu, talks frankly with his girlfriend about how teenage love might affect their studies, while Laobao questions school's value and relevance to real life.

The radical disjunction between image and sound interrupts the logic (and etymology) in which the agglutinating force of the "assembly" and the operation of the "assembly" of the parts converge in the dissonant structure of this documentary.

The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

This episode perpetrated the great Spaghetti Harvest Hoax on April Fool's Day 1957. The filmed report appeared to show a Swiss family harvesting their annual crop of spaghetti which was growing on trees on their farm, talked about the efforts to eradicate the Spaghetti Weevil and discussed the selective breeding that had been required to produce spaghetti of a uniform length. Many viewers believed what they saw and contacted the BBC to enquire how to grow their own spaghetti tree: the advice that they were given was "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best".
