This was based on a true story, also having been dramatized in the movie Donnie Brasco. also Based on the book Donnie Brasco-My Undercover Life in the Mafia by FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone and Richard Woodley.

It was to be followed by a television series, but low ratings canceled those plans. Commercials for the mini-series on NBC featured the song "Más" by the Mexican band Kinky.
