Yo hablo a Caracas

Yo hablo a Caracas (1978), the first documentary by Carlos Azpúrua, is marked by the luminous presence of the Yekuana shaman Barné Yavarí. This elder from the Amazonian forest articulates two powerful and prophetic warnings: first, a demand for respect toward the sovereignty of Indigenous beliefs and culture; second, a grave denunciation of the threat posed by “criollo” presence and its economically irrational logic to the natural balance of the Amazon. Through Yavarí’s voice, the film contrasts modern exploitation with a millennia-old Indigenous worldview grounded in harmony with nature, turning the documentary into an early and resonant plea for cultural dignity and ecological consciousness.

The film, based on Robert Schumann's Pictures from the East, shows in an unusual perspective the work of Nizar Ali Badr, a Syrian sculptor whose unique language of stone sculptures radiates happiness and love in the face of war, destruction, migration, poverty and injustice. The animated sculptures made of pebbles present us with short stories. The soundtrack of the animation - original arrangements of melodies from Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Music Boxes" - is performed by Gidon Kremer and the musicians of his orchestra Kremerata Baltika.

Study in Optical Rhythm

Made in 1953, Study in Optical Rhythm is an examination of the visual functions of rhythm. His best known film, it was drawn and painted directly onto the film stock at intervals of 4, 8, 12, 16 and 24 frames to find concurrence with a predetermined musical accompaniment. The film was intended to be screened both with and without music to explore differing audiovisual relationships. Technically Study in Optical Rhythm is thus reminiscent of the animations of Norman McLaren, Len Lye and Oscar Fischinger.
