The Raft of the Medusa

Hans Werner Henze’s “The Raft of the Medusa” is directly inspired by Théodore Géricault’s famous painting. The German composer sets to music the fate of 150 people who have been shipwrecked and abandoned to their destiny. This is a radical work that fluctuates between hope and inevitability, agony and sudden bursts of life. The Raft of the Medusa is an oratorio that was first performed in 1968. Fifty years on, the Italian director Romeo Castellucci underscores its immense modernity, drawing a striking parallel between Hans Werner Henze’s work and the current migrant crisis in the Mediterranean.

Andreas Scholl: Countertenor - A Portrait

The film accompanies the internationally renowned countertenor Andreas Scholl to recitals in Dresden, Schwetzingen and his home town, Kiedrich. In interviews Andreas Scholl sheds light on his personal and artistic development. In bonus parts of the DVD Andreas Scholl sings John Dowland's "Lute Songs" and Dietrich Buxtehude's "Jubilate Domino." Directly after the recital, Scholl and his co-performers discuss the works and their interpretation of them. "What is the point of a recital, an opera, what is the purpose of music, presented to an audience by performers, communicators? Of course, the purpose of music and art in general, is to enlighten and inspire the human spirit. It is about stimulating – and shaping – both our hearts and our minds." For the show that gave rise to the CD and DVD, the stage counts with 19m of mouth, 15m of depth and 11m of height. On the sides, were placed two screens of 6m x 5m.
