Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Rimini, there lived a beautiful princess named Nicoletta, who ruled alongside her older brother Riccardo after the death of their parents. This cheerful and witty princess, though wise for her age, foolishly fell in love with a song about the perfect and universally admired King of Salerno. Riccardo, like a loving brother, went to offer her hand to the king, regardless of what he thought of the idea. However, the proud king, spoiled by his mother, insultingly rejected her, saying that she was not worthy of his beauty, but he did not know that Nicoletta's other qualities included stubbornness and determination.
Six-year-old Anička Čejková has moved with her parents from the village to a new housing estate in Prague. For now, she and her father are alone, but her mother is due to return from the hospital soon with her newborn Ondřej. Heidi (1974) Japanese anime series by Zuiyo Eizo (now Nippon Animation) based on the Swiss novel Heidi's Years of Wandering and Learning by Johanna Spyri (1880). It was directed by Isao Takahata A feature-length film Heidi in the Mountains, aka The Story of Heidi, was edited from the series by Zuiyo (which by then was a separate entity from Nippon Animation, which employed many of the TV series' animation staff) distributed in 1979. All cast were replaced excluding Heidi and the grandfather. This movie is also the only incarnation of the Heidi anime to have been released commercially in the United States in English (on home video in the 1980s). Isao Takahata remarked "Neither Hayao Miyazaki nor I are completely related to any shortening version" on this work.
